Custom Challah Covers specializes in creating one of a kind challah/matzoh covers that distinguish themselves as works of art as they grace your Shabbat or Yom Tov table.The craftsmanship of each cover is of the highest quality with the weight and feeling of each piece resembling that of a tapestry. Antique textiles, and trim as well as imported French and Italian fabrics help to distinguish these works. The artist masterfully works with fabric, design, texture and color to create a very rich and detailed tableau or work of art. Most designs are one of a kind and are not repeated. They are gallery ready. The high calibre of artistry inherent in each piece is apparent.
Estelle Nussbaum is a graduate of Yale University, School of Art (MFA, Painting 1988—please see www.estellenussbaum.com for more information about Ms. Nussbaum's paintings). She began her career in Philadelphia in the 1980’s exhibiting at the Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show and the exclusive Helen Drutt Gallery. In New York City her work in fabric has been seen at the Julie Artisan’s Gallery on Madison Avenue and most recently at the Jewish Museum Celebration Gallery. In 2002 she had a one person show at the Slifka Center for Jewish life at Yale. Her paintings as well as textile art (challah/matzah covers) were displayed on two floors which proved to be an ideal setting for seeing the full oeuvre of this very talented artist. As for fabric she cites the glow of the Shabbat table as having indelibly impressed itself upon her visual and tactile memory. Jewish tradition and ritual are an integral part of her makeup.
The artist has always had a great interest in biblical references to color and architecture, ie. T’chalet and Argaman or Royal blue and Purple, or metallic craftsmanship employing n’choshet, u,barzel. Most works are one of a kind unique in every way. Occasionally the artist will present a limited edition series. It should also be noted that Ms. Nussbaum has undertaken commissions on Chupot(Marriage Canopies) as well as Torah Covers or any other Judaica in fabric. Custom Challah Covers specializes in personalizing each work according to your needs. Family names, bar/bat mitzvah gifts with the name of recipient, as well as date of bar/bat mitzvah, particular parshah or segment of the Torah being read can be customized accordingly. Indeed a custom challah cover can be created based upon the theme of a particular parshah. Any occasion requiring a unique and special gift Custom Challah Covers will try to accommodate. A larger size cover can be made to fit the any larger sized challah often used on special occassons. The personalization is done in Hebrew lettering individually hand cut in fabric and incorporated artfully into the cover.
Custom Challah Covers was born in 2003 when the artist’s son became a Bar Mitzvah. Every guest was given a challah cover as a remembrance of the special day These challah covers grace many homes and continue to generate many compliments.
Most of the work you see on the website can be purchased as seen or with the addition of any personalization you choose.
